چکیده

The comparative analysis of genetic structure and phylogeography of marine species can reveal the relative importance of common biogeographic barriers and species-specific evolutionary histories. In the present study, mitochondrial COI sequences from a total of 724 individuals collected from 38 localities throughout New Zealand during 2006 and 2007 were used to examine the genetic structure and demographic histories of the intertidal gastropods Zeacumantus subcarinatus and Zeacumantus lutulentus. For both species, results revealed isolation of populations located along the northern South Island and southern and western North Island, and extensive genetic structure throughout the remainder of their ranges. Despite this, long-distance dispersal and secondary admixture of divergent haplotypes was evident, especially for the widespread Z. subcarinatus. These findings reveal the importance of common barriers to gene flow and highlight how the interaction of inherent dispersal limitations of direct-developing marine organisms and periodic longdistance movements can produce complex genetic patterns.

Broad geographic analyses reveal varying patterns of genetic diversity and host specificity among echinostome trematodes in New Zealand snails.

Host specificity is a fundamental component of a parasite's life history. However, accurate assessments of host specificity, and the factors influencing it, can be obscured by parasite cryptic species complexes. We surveyed two congeneric species of intertidal snail intermediate hosts, Zeacumantus subcarinatus and Zeacumantus lutulentus, throughout New Zealand to identify the number of genetica...

Trematode-induced alterations in shell shape of the mud snail Zeacumantus subcarinatus (Prosobranchia: Batillariidae)

The shell morphology of mud snails, Zeacumantus subcarinatus, both uninfected and infected by trematodes, was compared to determine if di¡erent trematode species induce di¡erent degrees of alteration in host shell shape. Snails harbouring either the echinostomatid Acanthoparyphium sp., or a double infection by the microphallid Maritrema novaezealandensis and an undescribed philophthalmid specie...

Contrasting mtDNA diversity and population structure in a direct-developing marine gastropod and its trematode parasites.

The comparative genetic structure of hosts and their parasites has important implications for their coevolution, but has been investigated in relatively few systems. In this study, we analysed the genetic structure and diversity of the New Zealand intertidal snail Zeacumantus subcarinatus (n = 330) and two of its trematode parasites, Maritrema novaezealandensis (n = 269) and Philophthalmus sp. ...

A new cercaria and metacercaria of Acanthoparyphium (Echinostomatidae) found in an intertidal snail Zeacumantus subcarinatus (Batillaridae) from New Zealand.

A new 23-collar-spined cercaria and metacercaria are described from intertidal molluscs of the coast of New Zealand. The new cercaria found emerging from the mud snails Zeacumantus subcarinatus (Sowerby) (Prosobranchia: Batillariidae) is characterized mainly by the number and arrangement of the cephalic glands, the size of the suckers, and the size and number of the collar spines. The cercaria ...

Impact of trematodes on host survival and population density in the intertidal gastropod Zeacumantus subcarinatus

Ecological studies have demonstrated that parasites are capable of influencing various aspects of host life history and can play an important role in the structure of animal populations. We investigated the influence of infection by castrating trematodes on the reproduction, survival and population density of the intertidal snail Zeacumantus subcarinatus, using both laboratory and field studies...
